On October 1, 1908, the infant Ford Motor Co., which had been established a brief
five years before, announced its newest entry into the growing automobile market.
It was named the Model T. When production of this car stopped in May 1927, a
virtually unbroken line of over 15 million Model T Fords had been produced. All
Model T Fords were not alike, and despite the famous quote, "You could have any
color you want - so long as it was black," they were available in other colors.
The running changes made in the Model T between 1909 and 1927 were incomprehensible
in number. Despite this, almost all the basic and critical parts of the car
were interchangeable from one model year to any other. Any body style for any
year makes a good restoration project. Body styles in most years included the
Roadster, Touring, Coupe, and Fordor. The Model T was a basic and simple car
that most families could afford to own. The end of the Model T era came in
1927. It is generally accepted that never before, and not likely ever again,
will any product made by any manufacturer have the impact on our way of
living as did the wonderful Model T Ford. After 1924 sales began to decline.
Competition was becoming greater, and it was decided to make the 1926-1927
cars be a "New Ford," but in effect it was, under the surface, the same old
Model T. This heroic rejuvenation was a failure. Sales continued to fall.
Finally, in May 1927, production was halted and the changeover to the new
Model A was begun. When available in 1928, the new Model A was an instant
success.
