Introduced for the 1960 model year, the Ford Falcon represented a big step for the Big Three automakers in the U.S. Challenged by smaller, cheaper imports, Ford responded with the first compact car made by one of the leading U.S. car makers.

Produced from 1960 to 1970, the Comet inspired its Mercury stablemate, the Comet, which continued in production in various iterations through six generations to the 1977 model year. The Falcon ran through three generations.
