In1961FordboostedtheFalcon’shorsepowerto101witha170CIDsix.Abucket-seatandconsolemodelcalledtheFuturaandasedandeliveryversionwerenowavailable.CharlieBrownandLucy,fromPeanuts,werenowontheFordFalconsalesbrochuresandadvertisements.Theadvertisementsspokeofgreatfueleconomy,with30mpg.Almostonemillionvehiclesweresoldinthesefirsttwoyears.
TheSquiremodelwasintroducedin1962.Itwasa4-doorstationwagonwithfauxwoodtrimonthesides.Therewasalsothebucket-seatFuturamodelwithanupgradedinterior,safetybelts,spearsidetrimandnewemblems.DuringthisyearForddecidedtoremodeltherooflineatthebackwindowandintroducea4-speedtransmission.The2-doorFuturasedanhadchrometrimaroundthesidewindowopeningsandwasreferredtoanillusionhardtop.Nolongeravailablewasthewrap-aroundbackwindow.InsteadtherewasaflatrearwindowwhichwasactuallywhatalloftheotherFordcarshadatthetime.
In1963Forduppeditsgamewithevenmoredesignsandmodels.The4-doorFuture,Deluxewagon,FuturaSportsConvertibleandFuturaConvertiblewereallintroduced.TherewouldbehardtopsandanewSprintmodel.1963wasalsotheyeartheFairlane164hpChallenger260CIDV8enginewasoffered.LimitednumbersofFalconshadtheV8option.Only10,479Sprint2-doorhardtopsand4,602Sprintconvertibleswereproduced.
In1964ForddecidedtogoafterayoungermarketbyredesigningtheFordFalconwithamoremodern,squarelook.ASprintPackagewasavailable,boostingtheFalconuptoa260V8andlouderexhaustsystem.Thiscar,however,didn’treallydowellonthemarket,mainlybecausetheFordMustang’shighersales,andwasdiscontinuedin1965.June1965,wouldseethelastoftheFalconconvertibles.
In1965theFordFalconnowhada3-speedCruise-o-Maticautomatictransmissionavailableandcamewithfrontseatbelts.Powersteering,powerbrakes,radio,remote-controltrunkrelease,parkingbrakewarninglightandapaddedinstrumentpanelwerealloptional.Between1964and1965,around430,000Falconswereproduced.
1966broughtyetanotherredesignoftheFordFalcon.ThecarstartedtolookmorelikeaMustang,withalonghoodandshortdeckdesign.Newtothe1966FordFalconwastheheater-defroster.SixcylinderFalconsnowhad9-inchbrakesandV8shad10-inchbrakes.Theconvertiblewasnolongeravailable,andthetwo-doorhardtopwasdiscontinued.TheFordRancheroandthestationwagonwerenowonalargerplatformalongwiththeFairlane.
In1967FordaddedareminderlightforseatbeltsintheFordFalcon,andin1968theyaddedsquaretaillights.
1970wasthefinalyearoftheFordFalcon.The1970modeldidnothavealockingsteeringcolumn,whileallotherFordvehiclesdid.TheFordFalconwasn’tabletomeetsafetystandards,sothe1970modelisactuallyidenticaltotheFordFalconbuiltneartheendof1969.Salesdeclined.InJanuaryof1970theFalconnamewasnowonaTorinoplatformandcalleda‘70½Falcon.Itwasavailablein2-doorsedan,4-doorsedanand4-doorwagon.Oddlyenough,the’70½couldbeeverythingfromabasicpriceleadertoatop-performersinceavarietyof429s,includingtheSuperCobraJetengine,wereavailable.
TheFalconnamewasalsousedontheFordEconolinevan,onitspassengerversions.
ThereweredifferentvariationsoftheFordFalconproducedinCanada,Chile,Argentina,MexicoandAustralia.
TheFalconwascreatedtobeasmallcarinNorthAmerica,buttobeconsideredmid-sizedaroundtheworld.
TheFordFalconSprint,producedhalfwaythrough1963,isalmostcompletelyidenticalinmechanicstotheFordMustangproducedhalfwaythrough1964,eventhoughtheyarevisuallyverydifferentcars.
