TherewerethreegenerationsofFordFalconbetween1960and1970.Itwasofferedin4-doorand2-doorsedan,2-doorand4-doorstationwagon,convertible,2-doorhardtop,sedandeliveryandRancheropickupbodyconfigurations.

Promotedforitsgreatpriceandfueleconomy,the1960FordFalconwassaidtobe“TheNewSizeFord”.Ithadaunibodyconstructionanddrumbrakes.Poweredbya144CIDwith95hp,ithadathree-speedmanualcolumnshiftwithanoptionaltwo-speedFord-o-Maticautomatic.Whiletheinteriorwassimple,itwasquiteroomy.Itdidn’thavepowerbrakesorpowersteeringbuteconomywasthegoal,soit’snotreallysurprising.

In1961FordboostedtheFalcon’shorsepowerto101witha170CIDsix.Abucket-seatandconsolemodelcalledtheFuturaandasedandeliveryversionwerenowavailable.CharlieBrownandLucy,fromPeanuts,werenowontheFordFalconsalesbrochuresandadvertisements.Theadvertisementsspokeofgreatfueleconomy,with30mpg.Almostonemillionvehiclesweresoldinthesefirsttwoyears.

TheSquiremodelwasintroducedin1962.Itwasa4-doorstationwagonwithfauxwoodtrimonthesides.Therewasalsothebucket-seatFuturamodelwithanupgradedinterior,safetybelts,spearsidetrimandnewemblems.DuringthisyearForddecidedtoremodeltherooflineatthebackwindowandintroducea4-speedtransmission.The2-doorFuturasedanhadchrometrimaroundthesidewindowopeningsandwasreferredtoanillusionhardtop.Nolongeravailablewasthewrap-aroundbackwindow.InsteadtherewasaflatrearwindowwhichwasactuallywhatalloftheotherFordcarshadatthetime.

In1963Forduppeditsgamewithevenmoredesignsandmodels.The4-doorFuture,Deluxewagon,FuturaSportsConvertibleandFuturaConvertiblewereallintroduced.TherewouldbehardtopsandanewSprintmodel.1963wasalsotheyeartheFairlane164hpChallenger260CIDV8enginewasoffered.LimitednumbersofFalconshadtheV8option.Only10,479Sprint2-doorhardtopsand4,602Sprintconvertibleswereproduced.

In1964ForddecidedtogoafterayoungermarketbyredesigningtheFordFalconwithamoremodern,squarelook.ASprintPackagewasavailable,boostingtheFalconuptoa260V8andlouderexhaustsystem.Thiscar,however,didn’treallydowellonthemarket,mainlybecausetheFordMustang’shighersales,andwasdiscontinuedin1965.June1965,wouldseethelastoftheFalconconvertibles.

In1965theFordFalconnowhada3-speedCruise-o-Maticautomatictransmissionavailableandcamewithfrontseatbelts.Powersteering,powerbrakes,radio,remote-controltrunkrelease,parkingbrakewarninglightandapaddedinstrumentpanelwerealloptional.Between1964and1965,around430,000Falconswereproduced.

1966broughtyetanotherredesignoftheFordFalcon.ThecarstartedtolookmorelikeaMustang,withalonghoodandshortdeckdesign.Newtothe1966FordFalconwastheheater-defroster.SixcylinderFalconsnowhad9-inchbrakesandV8shad10-inchbrakes.Theconvertiblewasnolongeravailable,andthetwo-doorhardtopwasdiscontinued.TheFordRancheroandthestationwagonwerenowonalargerplatformalongwiththeFairlane.

In1967FordaddedareminderlightforseatbeltsintheFordFalcon,andin1968theyaddedsquaretaillights.

1970wasthefinalyearoftheFordFalcon.The1970modeldidnothavealockingsteeringcolumn,whileallotherFordvehiclesdid.TheFordFalconwasn’tabletomeetsafetystandards,sothe1970modelisactuallyidenticaltotheFordFalconbuiltneartheendof1969.Salesdeclined.InJanuaryof1970theFalconnamewasnowonaTorinoplatformandcalleda‘70½Falcon.Itwasavailablein2-doorsedan,4-doorsedanand4-doorwagon.Oddlyenough,the’70½couldbeeverythingfromabasicpriceleadertoatop-performersinceavarietyof429s,includingtheSuperCobraJetengine,wereavailable.

TheCometwasdevelopedconcurrentlywiththeFordFalconandwasfirstdevelopedasacompactcarintheEdsellineup.WhentheEdselbrandwasdiscontinuedbeforethe1960modelyear,FordtooktheleapandreleasedtheComet.WhenfirstproducedthecantedellipticaltaillightswerethesameastheEdselprototypedesignandalsohadtheEdsel“E”partnumber.TheinitialCometevenhadtheparkinglightsanddashboardknobsfromthe1959Edsel,aswellasthesameshapedkeys.

The1960CometwasproducedontheFordFalconplatformbuthadawheelbasethatwas5incheslonger.In1960thereweretwobodystylesavailable.The2-doorcoupe,4-doorsedanandthe2-and4-doorstationwagon.Allwereavailablewithastandardtrimandcustomtrimlevel,whichincludedbadging,all-vinylinteriorandextrachrome.Onlyoneenginewasavailable,the144cidThriftpowerstraight6withasingle-barrelHolleycarburetor.Itproduced90hp.Thereweretwotransmissionsavailable;thecolumn-shifted3-speedmanualanda2-speedMerc-O-Maticautomatictransmission.

In1961theCometenginegotanupgradetothe170cidstraight-6withasingle-barrelHolleycarburetorthatkickedout101hp.Thiswasduetothefactthatthe1960enginesimplydidn’tgiveenoughpower,resultinginalotofcomplaints.Therewasnowanew4-speedmanualtransmissionalsoavailableasanoption.Visuallythecardidn’tchangemuch,otherthananewgrilledesignandmovingtheCometscriptfromthefrontfendertotherearquarter.

Duringthis1961year,theS-22optionpackagewasavailablefortheComet.Itwasavailableonlyforthe2-doorsedanandreallyonlyincludedtheS-22badge,acenterconsole,Moroccanvinylbucketseats,andaspokedsteeringwheelwiththeS-22badgeinthecenter,bettercarpeting,undercoatingandstainlessfullwheelcovers,eventhoughwaspromotedasasportpackage.

In1962theMercuryCometwasofficiallymadeaMercuryModel.ThetrunkwasredesignedandthetaillightareawasmodifiedtomaketheCometlookmorelikeaMercury.FinallytheCometcarriedtheMercurybadge.TherewasnowtheCometVillager,whichwasessentiallyaCometCustom4-doorstationwagonwithsimulatedwoodgrainpanelsonthesides.

For1963anewconvertibleandhardtopcoupewereaddedtotheCometCustomandCometS-22lines.TheComet’schassisandsuspensionweremodifiedtoallowforanoptional260cidV8enginewith2-barrelcarburetorand164hp.

1964sawtheintroductionofamoresquareandboxydesignfortheCometonthe1963Cometunibody.TheFalconandComet2-doorsnowhadsharpercornersontheirroofline,followingonthesuccessofthefull-sizeFordandMercuryfastbackroofline.Modeldesignationsalsochanged.TheS-22wasreplacedbytheCyclone,a2-doorhardtopthatcamestandardwithconsole,bucketseats,andwheelcoversthatlookedlikechromewheels.ThetrimlevelsweretheCaliente,404and202.Thesereplacedthebaseandcustommodels.The2-doorstationwagonwasnolongerproducedin1964,whiletheVillagerwasstillthebeststationwagon.Thebaseengineoftheyearwasthe170cid6-engineafterthebase144cid6-enginewasdiscontinued.The289V8wasavailableinthemiddleoftheproductionyear,withthe260V8availablefromthebeginning.

In1965theCometgotanotherstyleboost,withnewfrontandreardesign,withstackedheadlights.The6-cylinderbaseenginewasnow200cidwith120hpat4400rpm.Thebase8-cylinderenginewasboostedupto289cidproducing200hp.The3-speedmanualcolumn-shiftedtransmissionwasstandard,withanoptionalMerc-O-Matic3-speedautomatictransmissionnowavailable.The289V8hadthreehorsepowerratingsavailable,thebase2-barrel200hp,4-barrel225hpandthe289cuwith271hpand4-speedmanualtransmission.

In1966theCometwasnowredesignedtobeamid-sizedcar,onthesamechassisastheFordFairlaneintermediate.Thewheelbasewasnow116inchesandthefronttrackwas58inches.TheCometwagonnowhadaDual-Actiontailgate,whichallowedittoswingopenfromthesideorfolddown.TheCometCaprireplacedtheComet404,andtheCometVoyager4-doorstationwagonreplacedtheComet404stationwagon.The2-doorstationwagon,theComet202,wasnowdiscontinued.TopofthelineforthisyearwasnowtheCometCycloneGT.

In1966newengineswereavailablefortheComet,includingthe390cidV8enginewithits2-barrelcarburetorand265hp,a390cidV8enginewith4-barrelcarburetorwith275hp,anda390cidV8enginewith335hp.TheCycloneGThadthe335hp390cidV8asastandardengine,butitwasoptionalonalloftheothermodels.TheCycloneGTalsohadtheCycloneGTAautomatictransmission.

In1967onlythebaseComet202hadtheCometname.Itwasavailableonlyina2or4doorsedanbodystyle.Othermodelswerereferredtobywhattheirnameswereearlierintheseries.In1967Mercury’smid-sizecarsincludethebaseComet202,theCapri,Caliente,CycloneandtheCycloneGT.Therewasstillthesteel-sidedVoyagerandtheVillagerstationwagonwithitssimulatedwoodpanels.TheMercuryCougarwasintroducedin1967,whichledtolowersalesfortheComet.FortheMercuryCyclonethestandardenginewasthe289V8with289cubicinchesand200hp.ThestandardComet,however,couldbeorderedwiththe427cubicinchside-oilerengine.

When1968arrived,Mercury’smid-sizemodelsweregivenafacelift,withnewsheetmetalandstyling.Itstillhadthe116inchwheelbase,butnowtheynowlookedlikefull-sizedMercurymodels.TheysharedtheirchassiswithFords’smid-sizedFairlaneandTorino.Themid-sizebasemodelwasnowthe2-doorcoupeComet,nolongerreferredtoastheComet202.TheCapriwasreplacedbytheMontego,andtheMontegoMXreplacedtheCaliente.Bothwereonlyavailableas2-doorhardtopsand4-doorsedans.Forthosewhowantedmorestyleandluxury,theMontegoMXBroughamoptionpackagewasavailable.TheCycloneconvertiblewasnowoutofproductionandthehardtopcoupeswereavailableasFormal-RoofhardtopsorFastbacs.

In1969thefrontgrillewaschanged,theheadlightsurroundswereremovedandthetaillightswerechangedaswell.Otherthanthattherewerenotverymanychanges.Infact,thiswasthelastyeartheCometnamewouldbeonmid-sizedmodel.ThenewCycloneCJandtheCycloneSpoilerwereintroduced.TheGToptionwasonlyanappearancegroupoptionnow.

Asforengines,anew250cidinline-6withasingle-barrelcarburetorkickingout155hpwasnowthestandard.Engineoptionsincludeda351cidV8with4-barrelcarburetorat290hp,a302cidV8with4-barrelcarburetorat220hp,anda428cidV8with4-barrelcarburetorat335hp.TheseV8sreplacedthe390cidV8s.

519CycloneSpoilerIIsweremadein1969,eachwith351cid4-barrelV8s.TheycamewithtwotrimversionsnamedafterMercuryNASCARdrivers.TheCaleYarborougheditionhadredtrimandasignaturedecal,whiletheDanGourneySpoilerhadadarkblueroofandstriping,andasignatureonthelowerwhiteportionofthecar.
